How do you build a clear family partnership?

Partnership starts with information parents can understand and know how to contribute to, not simply more messages.

Explain what matters to the family

A professional report may contain many details. When sharing an update, explain the activity the child joined, what they demonstrated and the support they needed. Choose language connected to daily routines rather than relying on a code or score.

Make participation possible at home

The team may choose a simple play or mealtime activity linked to the child's goal. Explain the steps, support and observation method to the family, considering their time and what suits them. Participation does not mean turning home into an extra session schedule.

Receive observations in context

A skill may appear at home but not at the center, or the reverse. Recording the activity, person, place and assistance makes the family's observation more useful for review. A different result is an opportunity to understand the context, not to judge another party.

Share within access permissions

Photos, observations and reports are shared according to family permissions, center policy and appropriate consents. The team reviews what may be shared and respects the privacy of any other child appearing in the material.

Make the next step clear

After an update or report, explain what the team will work on and what the family can observe, when appropriate. A specific question is easier to answer than a general request such as “follow the child at home.”

Use milestones for conversation

Developmental milestones can help families observe and ask questions. They do not give a diagnosis or replace specialist screening. When there is an observation, discussing it with the team or specialist remains the appropriate path.
